Are You Waiting For a Slot?

There’s nothing more frustrating than getting to your plane, ready to take off, only to hear the captain say, “We’re waiting for a slot.” What does that mean and why can’t we just get going?

In a slot machine, the player inserts cash or, in “ticket-in, ticket-out” machines, a paper ticket with a barcode, into a designated slot, and activates the machine by pulling the handle or pushing a button. The reels then spin and, if a winning combination of symbols is hit, the player earns credits according to the machine’s paytable. Classic symbols include fruit, bells and stylized lucky sevens. Most slot games have a theme, with bonus features and payouts often aligned with the theme.

A slot is also a position in a group, sequence or series; an assignment, job opening or berth. The term is also used for an open vacancy, as in a military or civilian organization; in sports, for an unoccupied area between the face-off circles on an ice hockey rink.

Many players believe that a slot is ‘due’ to pay out, but this simply isn’t true. Each spin of a slot is determined by the random number generator, and only symbols that appear on a payline that you’ve bet on will win. Don’t waste your money or time chasing a slot you think is due – it will never happen. It’s also important to understand that slot volatility, RTP and betting limits are all interconnected.
